Learn-to-Swim FAQs
How do I register for swim lessons?
Registration is available in person at the URec Program Desk located inside the Student Activity Center (SAC). The hours are Monday-Thursday from noon-7:00pm and Friday from noon-6:00pm. You may also print a registration form from our aquatics website and mail it in along with a check. There is an additional form for private swim lessons so we can best match you with an instructor based on your goals. Mail-in space is not guaranteed until you have received confirmation from URec. We apologize, but we cannot accept registrations via fax or over the phone. Please stop by in person or mail the registration forms and a check (made payable to CMU) to:

How do I know what level class my child should be in?
You may refer to our course descriptions listed on our website or on our flyer. Typically if your child has never had swim lessons and is not comfortable in the water, he or she will probably be in Level 1. If your child is comfortable in the water, he or she may be in Level 2. The only difference between “A” and “B” for Levels 1 and 2 is the age of the child. In order to enroll your child in Level 3 or higher he or she must have passed the previous level or get approval from the Assistant Director of Aquatics. If you are unsure of the appropriate level, please contact the Assistant Director of Aquatics & Safety
(jenki1aj@cmich.edu) who would be happy to assist you.
Each class has a maximum enrollment level in order to maintain an appropriate instructor-to-student ratio. Once a class is full, those still interested in the class can be placed on a waitlist (without paying) and will be notified if space becomes available. If space is available you will need to submit payment before the first class. You may view a complete list of our rules.
Why must I wear appropriate swimwear when using the pool or spa?
Commercial swim attire must be worn while using the pool and spa to ensure the cleanliness of the facility and safety of patrons. Approved swim diapers or protective covering must be worn by all participants who are not toilet trained. You may view a complete list of our rules.
Where do the swim lessons take place?
All lessons are held in the Rose Pool where the water temperature range is 85-87 degrees Fahrenheit. This is the recommended range for instructional and therapeutic pools. Rose Natatorium primarily offers activities including swimming classes for infants through adults, water exercise, senior aqua, aquatic safety education courses, water therapy, and academic courses.
To get to Rose Pool, you may park in the SAC parking lot and enter to the right of the main SAC entrance where it says, “Rose Arena.” Just follow the red carpeted hallway until it dead ends, take a left and an immediate right. Rose Pool is on your right about halfway down the hallway and there will be signs on the first day of class.
What is the refund and cancellation policy for swim lessons?
All programs cancelled by University Recreation will be refunded in full. Participants requesting a refund before the start of the program must submit a request prior to the registration deadline. Participants may receive a refund less the $5 service fee. No refunds are available once a program has begun unless a medical note is provided. Private lesson participants must contact the instructor 48 hours prior to the scheduled lesson in order to reschedule. If the participant does not contact the instructor within that time frame, the participant forfeits that class.
What is the make-up policy if my child misses a swim lesson?
URec cannot offer individual make-up lessons if your child misses a class. If URec cancels a class due to unforeseen circumstances, you will be contacted regarding other arrangements.
