National Girls & Women in Sports Day
Central Michigan University celebrated the annual National Girls & Women in Sports day on February 3rd. University Recreation and CMU athletics co-hosted their 8th annual event at the Student Activity Center on the campus of CMU. Jenn Nottingham, University Recreation Associate Director of Programming said “girls and their mentors participated in field hockey, volleyball & soccer skill clinics with CMU coaches. It’s a positive experience with lots of one-on-one attention.” Women’s soccer coach Tony Di’Tucci said “basically it’s an introduction to different skills so that they can gain familiarity in sports and some confidence in doing some of these things players do in a game”
“It’s a great time for the young girls” said Christy Freese, Women’s Field Hockey Coach, “I think they enjoy being able to work with collegiate athletes to get introduced to a stick and ball and we try to introduce them to all sports.”
Marcy Weston, Senior Associate Athletic Director said; ”Girl’s and Women in Sport Day provides a great opportunity for CMU Athletics to partner with URec to celebrate the value of sport in the lives of girls and women Seeing these girls and their mothers/mentors learning and being active in the same venue is what this day is all about. Our hope is that the participants continue to be active in their daily lives.” |
